The Devil’s Whore

The Devil’s Whore Synopsis

From BAFTA winning writer Peter Flannery, The Devil’s Whore is a four part mini-series set during the English Civil War. Starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Andrea Riseborough.

In 1649 the world was shocked to the core when the English beheaded their King. This was a turning point in modern history. Charles I, whose subjects believed was appointed by God, had been captured, tried, convicted and executed for high treason. The monarchy was abolished and a republic was declared. Contemporaries thought the world was being “turned upside down”.

Through these turbulent, extraordinary times, as the country becomes divided by issues of religion, political power and burgeoning ideas of freedom and equality, we follow the life and loves of an extraordinary woman: Angelica Fanshawe (Riseborough).

Born rich into the King’s circle, she is a staunch Royalist until she witnesses the King’s brutality at first hand and throws in her lot with the revolutionaries. She has to fend for herself through prostitution and armed robbery – winning herself the title “The Devil’s Whore”. She becomes the lover of a heroic revolutionary until his murder. She is a confidante of Oliver Cromwell in his time ruling over the first, and only, English republic. She joins an idealistic organisation who desire egalitarianism: the first movement of its kind in modern history. And eventually she is wife to the man who attempts an audacious, suicidal mission to assassinate Cromwell.
