The Runaway Synopsis

Set in Soho’s underbelly in the 60s and 70s, The Runaway is a compelling drama about a runaway girl, an outrageous transvestite who adopts her and an epic love story between two childhood sweethearts.

When Cathy Connor (Joanna Vanderham) and Eamonn Docherty (Jack O’Connell) are thrown together as children in the East End their fate is sealed. Driven by their desire to be together, the very choices they make drive them further apart: Whilst Cathy grows up in the heart of London’s underworld, Eamonn flees to New York to build a new life for himself. As the world of Soho moves from the innocence of the 60s to the sleaze and sex of the 70s, Eamonn and Cathy are drawn back together again. In a changed world of IRA bombings, police corruption and strikes, they discover that no matter what they do, they cannot escape their past.

Alan Cumming returnsto UK screens in his first British television role in 15 years, taking on the flamboyant role of transvestite Desrae in the adaptation of Martina Cole’s popular novel.

Cumming is joined by Ken Stott as Joey Pasqualino, Keith Allen as gangster Danny Dixon, Jack O’Connell as Eamonn Docherty and in her first professional acting role Joanna Vanderham as Cathy Conor.
